How do you Approach Life?
 Bill Blalock, "America's Life Coach"
Every day we look at life from our own perspective. Two people can view a similar life event and each react in a totally different way. So it’s not the event, but how we respond to it. It many cases it’s a matter of our attitude. And that’s a choice!
I am convinced that there are three basic ways to approach life. They’re three of the best choices we make and three of the best attitudes we can ever have. I could almost guarantee that the more you use these three approaches, the more success you will find in life.
First, think with an open mind. An open mind is the beginning of self discovery and growth. We can’t learn anything new until we can admit that we don’t already know everything. The purpose of gaining more knowledge isn’t to fill our minds but to open them. It helps us to see all sides, to be more understanding, and to be aware of our own limitations.
Second, think for yourself. Without any effort of even realizing what’s happening, we can turn our lives into exercises in mindless conformity: go with the flow. In other words, let others do our thinking for us. It’s like getting into a circle and following the follower to nowhere. Since the ability to choose is our greatest freedom and source of strength, then we can’t give up the right to choose our thoughts. We can choose our own thoughts and with them, our own beliefs, values and priorities. We need to develop and appreciate our own character. If we let others do our thinking for us, we will never experience the integrity of our own minds.
Third, think constructively. Does positive thinking work? Not always. Positive thinking has a nice ring to it, but too many people, it’s just wishful thinking. Positive thinking has to be accompanied with genuine belief. People who succeed in life don’t just think they can, they believe they can! That’s why I prefer constructive thinking. Constructive thinkers are aware of negative ideas clamoring for attention, but don’t allow themselves to be dragged down by them. Instead, they train themselves to choose thoughts which build character and lead to personal achievement.
As John Homer Miller once said, “ Your living is determined not so much by what life brings to you as by the attitude you bring to life; not so much by what happens to you as by the way your mind looks at what happens.”
