What is it they say, “The road to hell is paved with good intentions?” We all have the best of intentions when beginning a new fitness and nutrition program. Everything is going along just fine and then wham, one little misstep and you're headed to hell. Well, maybe not that far, but still, you’re off your routine. These are a few tips on how to stay the course.
If you have family members or roommates, tell everyone what you’re doing, and why it’s important to you. Help them to understand why this will benefit them in the end, as well. You certainly don’t want them bringing home McDonalds and Marble Slab when you’re eating a grilled chicken breast and asparagus for dinner. It will only be a matter of time before you’re joining them.
Always pre-plan your week. Plan your meals, plan your workouts, and plan your sleep schedule. Allow for at least one to two ‘off’ days from the gym, so that when life happens to throw a wrench in your workout plans, you don’t have to freak out about missing ‘leg day’. You simply fit it in on your previously scheduled ‘off’ day. I think it’s also important to have a cheat day when it comes to your meals. Pick just one day, and allow yourself to eat and drink anything you want. Sacrificing all week is not so difficult when you have that one day to look forward to.
Journal your journey. Record all things mentioned above, but also jot down how you’re feeling each day. Over time, you may be surprised at your change in attitude and excitement level. You may start to realize that you’re actually looking forward to your training days or a new healthy recipe.
Finally, never forget to reward yourself for your achievements. Pick a few milestones. For instance, maybe every four weeks, you can ‘weigh in’ and take your body fat, and treat yourself to a day at the spa or a new outfit for reaching your goals.
Remember to be kind to yourself. No one is perfect. You’re trying to change habits that may be 30 years old. That takes time. If you fall off of your plan don’t let it become a downward spiral. Pick yourself up and get back to your routine. Keep our focus forward and you’ll get there.
